The sense of what’s missing – “Absentia”
Forefront’s third studio album out now
The band is now a trio featuring Jack D’Amico (piano),
Umberto Lepore (double bass) and Marco Castaldo (drums)

Sometimes, when looking for the missing pieces, you have to improvise. This is what Italian act Forefront did on their third studio album – “Absentia”, out now under the Auand Piano Series – piecing the tiles together to outline an absence, and creating an entire album around it.

After releasing the first two works in 2014 and 2017, the band turned into a trio that features Jack D’Amico on piano, Umberto Lepore on double bass and Marco Castaldo on drums. Change is key to them: «Forefront – D’Amico says – has been around for 8 years. The line-up has changed frequently: electric trio, quartet, acoustic trio. We’re an ever-changing project, although our ideas are pretty clear. “Absentia” captures a specific time and it only shows one facet. Most likely, the band will be different in one year.»

Backed by a deep research on sound and contemporary music, as well as improvised music, Forefront’s latest work is mostly made up by songs, tied together with improvisation on live sessions, enriched by the use of unusual techniques, prepared instruments and objects. Such detours are only made possible by a shared vision, and a true friendship: «Each of us knows the others very well, and when we don’t share the same music path, we share our human path. It’s not a perfect union, but we’re always aligned.»

Deeply introspective, “Absentia” can’t keep from staring at dark and obscure areas, stubbornly examining them, insisting on short melodic cells or highlighting the dialogue between two instruments until it explodes, as if it releases the devastating strength of a scream long held back.

«It was during a very tough moment in my life when we worked on this studio album – D’Amico adds – It includes everything I felt was missing at that time. Somehow, it’s been a lifeline: it reminded me the reasons why I play music.»
